PAINTING THE TOWN RED

Painting The Town Red...

Owes its place in the English language to a mad prank which took place in         Melton Mowbray in the early hours of Thursday morning 6th April 1837.

During this week a great amount of excitement was to be seen in the town, owing to the Croxton Park Races.

Many visitors of rank and fashion had come to stay and meet friends who resided in the metropolis of fox hunting during the winter months.

The Marquis of Waterford with a large party attended the races and was billeted in Melton.

NEW YEAR'S HUNT

Frost-borne wind moans and
breathes a sigh,
Swan Porch and Butter Cross
rest under an azure sky;
Shutters move to capture the meet,
Hunting pink, coats of tradition
on a Melton street.

Daubed reflections of a town's
blood red coat,
Prince of Wales feathers, hand-
made boots of note.
Parasols paraded in summers
passed by,
Hunt cake, stirrup cup, and the
succulent sapor of a Melton pie.

THE HUNTERS

Under a frenzied sky
wild images blaze,
To a decaying day
the dark wood rages;
Along the hunters' savage path
green fields lie numb.

Man casts his shadow.

First Flight is the story about a wager that took place at North Lodge on Wednsday March 31st 1880. The wager being to ride a horse upstairs and to return safely still mounted. Peter Flower who was the rider and was staying at the North Lodge for the season managed to ride the horse upstairs.It was then the horse refused to budge.it was Friday afternoon when they managed to get the horse down. This was done by taking the landing window out and hoisting the horse down in a cage.
